I Beat The Wrap.

February 29, 2008 cwriter79 3 comments

That’s right folks! The two tickets I received back in January were thrown out after a rather intimidating court experience.

So, I got up early Wednesday morning, dressed in a really nice suit, gathered the ”evidence” needed to prove my innocence and headed over to Judicial Annex in Lawrenceville. The place was pretty empty and I spoke to a clerk right away. She informed me that traffic court didn’t convene until 1pm, so I headed home.

About 12:30, I go out there again, only this time, there’s a really long line. When I finally get to the clerk, I’m told to go upstairs to courtroom C. Upon finding the right place, I open the door to a small-sized courtroom. Taking a seat in one of the pews, I wait to be called.

Before the judge arrived, this short lady with short brown hair verified the charges to be heard for the day. She looked and acted like a district attorney, but I’m not sure if that was her official title.  In addition to verifying the charges, she also tried to guage how long each hearing would last. The right to privacy in traffic courtroom must be slim, because I was able to hear all the charges levied against the people sitting around me. Frankly, it made me a little nervous. DUIs, driving without licenses and driving without insurance were just a few of them. Surely, me and my piddly charge were in the wrong courtroom I thought, but no such luck. Immediately the DA (let’s call her that for now) tries to get me to plead guilty to my charges. I tell her my defense. She tells me that it won’t hold up against the law. Seeing the defeated look on my face, the DA suggests that I stay and talk to the judge anyway.

The judge finally arrives. The major cases are up first. Each verdict handed down makes me more and more tense. The first DUI defendant gets a hefty fine, probation, and house arrest for 30 days. The first driving-without-license defendant gets a hefty fine as well. The third defendant doesn’t even show up and a bench warrant is issued for his arrest. (I forget what he did, but whatever it is, it requires a mandatory court appearance.)

“Tyrese Howard!” the bailiff bellows. I get up from my seat and take my position in front of judge, my little manila folder tucked under my arm. The DA reads the charges and tells the judge that my defense is that I’m a student (which works for the violation I was charged with). The judge gives me a reproachful look and I immediately claim that I have proof. She asks to see it and I hand my folder to the bailiff, who gives it to the DA, who gives it to the judge. She looks through the documents and asks me a few questions about the date when I started school (which she mistakenly thought was January due to the switch). After clarifying, there’s an uncomfortable silence. I nervously put my hands in my pocket and immediately receive this light tap on my shoulder. It’s the bailiff. He whispers to me to leave my hands by my side where he can see them. More uncomfortable silence. Panic courses through my body, causing my hands involuntarily hide in my pockets once again. I quickly take them out after receiving a look from the bailiff.

After what seems like an eternity, the judge says dismissed and tells me I’m free to go. I’m so stunned I’m unable move until the DA hands me back my documents. I high tail it out there after that. Halfway down the stairs, I realize that I haven’t clue what just happened. I go back to the clerk for verification. She gives me this “duh” look and says, “Yes sir. You’re free to go.”

Now that the whole ordeal is over, I’m making an effort to drive much more carefully because I never want to step foot inside a courtroom again that unless I’m on the jury.

Is This What They Mean By “Push It!”?

February 27, 2008 cwriter79 1 comment

So, today the familiar suggestion to “push it” came up again in a yet another critique of student work. Pushing it means going to the extreme, exploring the far reaches of your creative mind to communicate something in a fresh and new way while staying on strategy. Students are encouraged to do this for two main reasons: 1) to get noticed in the real world of advertising, and 2) to get it out of our system, because in the real world someone will always reel you back in.

Well, I wonder what happened to the person who was supposed to reel the creatives in on this one. I warn you, these ads are pretty gruesome. While highly effective, they’re also a bit much, but hell, what do I know. Just imagine 1) coming up with something like this, and 2) having the guts to show it to creative director or a client for that matter. When the client saw this and then said, “Hey, we’ll take it!” I kind picture faces like this one, but without the iStock logo.

And now, a shameless plug. Todays post is inspired by AdFreak, a pretty sweet blong about advertising if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Weight Loss Challenge.

fat-belly2.jpg

So, this morning during my regular routine of getting ready for school, I caught a profile shot of myself in the bathroom mirror. I immediately had a childhood flashback fo me standing in front of the mirror with my belly puffed out like those kids you see in National Geographic. This time, however my belly didn’t seem to need any help from me to look distended. Holy crap! No biggie. Could be trapped gas, right? Wrong. After showering, I pulled on a pair of jeans and almost killed myself trying to button them. Not good.

Well, the scale came out after that and lo and behold I have gained 7 pounds! How the hell did that happen? Oh wait, now I remember. Bad eating and no time to exercise. Awesome. Needless to say, I thought it proper to bring out the resolution list again and work on resolution #2. Wish me luck!

My First Advertising Perk.

February 18, 2008 cwriter79 2 comments

So, I’ve heard about creatives in the ad game getting certain perks from the clients that they work for. These perks range from a free sample of the product you’re advertising to free trips to exotic locales (mostly to shoot a commerical or something).

Well, I think I may have gotten my first perk, and a pretty cool one at that. My current assignment involves a poster/ad campaign for the Center of Puppetry Arts. After bouncing around some initial ideas, my team and I decide to experience the Center as inspiration for ”the big idea.” The ticket prices are pretty reasonable for someone who has a full-time job and a stable income. Since none of that applies to us at the moment, we were pretty apprehensive.

Enter Emma who not only works for the Circus, but works for the Center as well. We went to her, told her what we wanted to do and voila! Can you say free tickets to two shows, the puppet museum, a puppet-making workshop and a backstage tour? I knew you could! After spending an entire day there, I have say this place is pretty amazing. Never had I imagined the world of puppetry to be so extensive and so international. Both of the shows were awesome (even the family friendly one with the screaming kids) and the museum was very informative if not a little spooky. (You may not want to hang out too long in the room I’ve dubbed the puppet closet. It’s the stuff of nightmares.) If you’re in Atlanta, I recommend that you should definitely check it out.

Well, I’m off to come up with cool ideas or “ideate.” Feel free to enjoy my interpretation of Duke Ellington’s cat.

I Love Cool Dance Shows!

February 8, 2008 cwriter79 1 comment

So, I crawled out from under my rock and stumbled over the show America’s Best Dance Crew. I LOVE it! Okay, so maybe Mario Lopez is just about the cheesiest host on television, but to see a show that features Shane Sparks as a judge and some of the flyest hip-hop/breakin’/pop n’ lock/(insert cool dance style) groups is just freaking amazing. After managing to miss the entire season of So You Think You Can Dance, I am ecstatic that another cool dance show is on the air, even though it’s the brain child of Randy Jackson. (I usually shun anything that has to do with American Idol).

Anyway, I’m kind of upset Enigma Dance Kru (from my hometown of Tampa, FL.) got sent home tonight, but I have to admit that they didn’t bring it like some of the other groups. My favorite groups right now are Kaba Modern (dance crew from UC Irvine), Live In Color (from Miami, a city I hate with a passion) and Status Quo from Boston. Looks like I’ll be glued to MTV on Thursday Nights.
